Prepn. of non-foaming, aq. suspensions of fibrils made from a polymer other than polyolefins comprises dispersing the fibrils in water in the presence of 0.1-2 wt. % (on dry wt. of the fibrils) of an anionic protective colloid (I) as dispersion aid. (I) is pref. a melamine-HCHO polycondensate; the NH4 salt of a maleic acid - vinyl isobutyl ether copolymer, or the NH4 salt of a styrene and acrylic acid copolymer. The suspensions, opt. mixed with cellulose fibres, are used to make synthetic paper. By using (I) foaming in the papermaking machine is prevented; excellent dispersion is achieved at low (I) concns. and the prods. have high wet strength.
