PURPOSE:To provide a water-absorbable resin having large water-absorbing rate, absorbed water amount and gel strength, by treating a powdery water- absorbable polymeric compound having carboxyl groups or carboxylate groups with a crosslinking agent in the presence of specific amounts of water and a dihydric alcohol. CONSTITUTION:100 pts.wt. of a powdery water-absorbable polymeric compound having carboxyl groups and/or carboxylate groups (e.g., the hydrolysate of starch/acrylonitrile-grafted copolymer or the saponified product of vinyl acetate/ acrylic acid ester copolymer) is treated with a crosslinking agent (e.g., glutaraldehyde) having two or more functional groups capable of reacting with the polymeric compound in the presence of 2-40 pts.wt. of water and 0.3-10 pts.wt. of a dihydric alcohol (butanol or 2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol) excluding 2-6C diethylene glycol to provide a highly water-absorbable resin. |
