The bed base consists of a welded wire grid attached to a frame. Only the longitudinal wires (7) have a pretensioned connection to the cross beams (2, 3) which form the head and foot ends. The wires (7) have indentations at a distance from each other along their lengths, and have a welded connection to the cross beams (2, 3). The transverse wires are attached, at least on one side, to a tensioning beam which is itself adjustably connected to the corresponding cross beams. The indentations (9) are located about half way between pairs of transverse wires (8) which form the wire grid.
