The housing (1) of a vertical electrical machine is supported on a resilient pedestal on top of the base plate (2). This consists of springs and torsional dampers, to provide radial and vertical resistance to vibration. There are also buffers which limit movement past fixed boundaries. The compound damping is provided by leaf springs (3) mounted vertically between a pair of side buttresses (4), overlaid by a cross-beam (5) with transverse buffers (6) between the springs (3). When the springs reach resonant frequency oscilations, they hit the buffers and are set vibrating at a different frequency to reduce amplitude of vibration and increase effective rigidity. The cross-beam may be raised or lowered to throw the vibrations out of phase at different frequencies. A wedge (7) can be inserted between one buttress (4) and the cross-beam (5) to compensate asymmetric loading.
