In order to enable a self-priming mode of operation of the centrifugal pump, that end (3b) of the intake pipe (3) connected to the pump, which is designed to be immersed into the liquid to be delivered, is fitted with an axial-flow auxiliary impeller (4) which is drive-connected to the main impeller (2b) via the shaft (5). Alternatively, a plurality of auxiliary impellers may be arranged in series. Arranged at the end of the intake pipe there may be a sleeve (9) which automatically clears the orifices (8), when the flow through the impeller (2b) has built up. <IMAGE>
