A cutting wheel 14 is used to slit the rod which is then opened by a plough shaped device 39. If the rod is to be moved intermittently the pockets are formed by a plurality of heated vertically moveable dies 34 and the particulate material deposited from one of a number of hoppers 40. If the rod is moved continuously a wheel 112 having a plurality of spaced circumferential dies is used to form the pockets and a deposition wheel 120 having spaced circumferential recesses is used for depositing the particulate material. |
