Thatch reeds or bamboo sticks are impregnated with protective agents at ambient temp. by subjecting the reeds or bamboo to (a) vacuum treatment including maintaining a pressure of 10-400 mmHg (50-200) and introducing an aq. soln. of a water-soluble chemical agent at a vacuum of >=400 mmHg and (b) impregnating the reeds or bamboo following release of the vacuum using the pressure difference and continuing the impregnation at normal or high press. of 0-15 atmos. Impregnation can be carried out without the vacuum pressure using 10 to 15 atmos. pressure. Method is used for protecting reeds or bamboo sticks against fire, insects, vegetable or animal damage. Reeds are used for thatching and bamboo for windscreens, roofing, mats, walls or ornamental partitions.
