1465603 Electrophotographic developer polymer compositions AUSTRALIA DEPT OF MFG INDUSTRY 29 March 1974 [2 April 1973] 14149/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] A method of producing an electrophotographic developer comprising an electrically insulating carrier liquid having developer particles suspended therein comprises adding a polymer to a selected solvent such that the polymer dissolves in the solvent and the dissolved molecules of the polymer take up solvent, thereby forming the carrier liquid; and mixing the liquid with a particulate solid toner material whereby some of the carrier liquid is taken up by the toner material and expands so as to break some of the molecular bonds within the toner material and reduce the size of the latter to molecular or macromolecular form, thereby forming the desired developer particles suspended in the carrier liquid. Preferably the carrier liquid is agitated as it is mixed with the toner material. The polymer may be a styrenebutadiene copolymer, polyethylene, vinyltolueneacrylic copolymer, polystyrene, other hydrocarbon polymers, acrylic-styrene copolymer, styrene-acrylic-acrylonitrile copolymer, an acrylic polymer, styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, vinylidene chloride polymer, vinyl propionate polymer or acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer. Useful solvents are isoparaffinic hydrocarbon liquids. Examples of toner materials are carbon black; metal chromates, oxides, sulphides, selenides etc.; metal powders such as aluminium, bronze and zinc powders; fluorescent pigments; and organic pigments such as phthalocyanine pigments and aniline black. |
