The device for producing an opposing flow in a swimming pool has a water pump and an electric motor whose shaft is connected in a liquid-tight and electrically insulated manner to the impeller of the pump. In order reliably to prevent the risk of electrical power being transferred from the electric motor into the water of the swimming pool in the event of stress being applied in the form of waves and water spray, and hence to prevent accidents, the pump (5) and the electric motor (2) are each arranged in chambers (14 and 13 respectively) which are separated from one another in a watertight manner by means of a separating wall (12), the shaft (3, 4) between the motor (2) and the pump (5) being passed through the separating wall (12) by means of a seal (18). <IMAGE>
