<p>1501880 Welding by pressure O A BECKER 16 Dec 1974 [15 Dec 1973] 54194/74 Addition to 1487342 Heading B3R [Also in Division E1] Outer 11 and inner 15 wall elements and pressure transmitting means, e.g. honeycombs 13, having line contact therewith of a load-bearing structural element are assembled in a pressure housing 1a-1e and, after the desired pressure conditions have been created in the space between and around the elements, they are pressed together by plates 8 and/or bolts 111v, and welded together by resistance or electric arc pressure welding. A capacitor impulse welding current is preferably used. The wall elements and honeycombs are connected to welding equipment arranged outside the pressure housing. The honeycombs and the facing surfaces of the inner and outer wall elements 12, 14, 15 are preferably of aluminium or steel, alternating layers of foam plastics or other insulating materials 11, 17, 18 and further aluminium or steel sheets make up the rest of the composite inner and outer wall elements. The space between and around the wall elements is preferably evacuated but may be at a pressure greater than atmospheric. Springs 13a are provided to hold the elements spaced during evacuation and are supported on a pad of resilient insulating material 20. The parent Specification (Division E1) assembles similar load bearing elements but bonds them together by means other than welding.
