The surface pref. consists (partly) of a semiconductor or insulator and prevents penetration of impurities into the electroluminescent material. Relatively little energy and partic. a much lower current are needed for forming. The discrete regions consist of windows in the coating and/or the electrode. The coating has a work function of 2-6 eV and consists of Cus, ZnS, CuO, ZnO, CuSeO3, ZnSeO3, Al2O3 SiO or Y(O,S) and is 5 mu m thick.
