In the examination of gases and/or liquids, e.g. the effluent from a chromatograph, repetitive discharges are caused across electrodes in the chamber D by repetitively applying a rising D.C. voltage. Upon a change in gas constituent a change in frequency of the discharges occurs and a count of the number of discharges gives the quantity of constituent. In gas chromatograph measurements, the frequency of discharges is compared with a reference frequency, which may be obtained from a reference detector having only the carrier gas passed therethrough. |
