The heading arrangement for a root crop harvester has a sensing wheel driven at a speed corresponding to the machine running speed. A header is fitted to the sensing wheel. An up and down motion of the header arrangement increasing or decreasing the running speed of the sensing wheel. The header arrangement is supported so that it can be moved backwards/inwards relative to the machine frame. The header arrangement further opens or constricts the flow to an oil motor for the drive of the sensing wheel. The motion takes place in a straight line guide of the machine frame.
