PURPOSE:To eliminate an excessive rise in temperature in an area where paper is not fed ad to eliminate adverse influence upon a fixing roller and save power consumption by sectioning the temperature rise area into plural areas in the axial direction of the fixing roller and raising the temperature only in a necessary area according to the width of fed paper. CONSTITUTION:When a pinion 21 rotates to move a slip ring 6, the slip ring 6 contacts only a contacting part 14A if the right edge of the slip ring 5 is at a right-edge position I, so that only a heat generation area 11 is supplied with power, thereby generating heat here. Then, when the right edge of the slip ring 6 comes to a position II, the slit ring 6 contacts contacting part 14A and 16A to supply power to to heat generation areas 11 and 12, where heat is generated. Further, when the right edge of the slip ring 6 reaches III, the slip ring 6 contacts all of the contacting parts 14A, 16A, and 18A, and the heat generation areas 11, 12, and 13 are all supplied with power, thereby generating heat over the entire surface of the roller.
