N-unsubst oxaziridines (isoximes)

Cpds. of formula (I) (where R and R1 are aliphatic residues which may be linked to form a ring), useful as intermediates for caprolactam, hydrazines, hydroxylamines and semicarbazides, are prepd. by reacting RR1CO and aqs. NH3 soln. in the presence of an organic water-imiscible solvent (pref. Et2O, CHCl3, CH2Cl2, ClCH=CCl2, petrol, C6H6, C6H5CH3 or C6H5Cl, or excess RR1CO opt. in admixture with one of these solvents) with a hypochlorite solution (pref. Na, K or Ca hypochlorite in neutral or alkaline soln.) at -10 to +50 degrees C. (pref. 0-25 degrees C). Advantages are simplicity, economy and good yields.
