In a process for coating a metal, e.g. steel, article with a metal, e.g. Cr, Ni, Mn or Co, by immersion in a molten bath containing at least 10% by weight of a metal transfer agent which is Ca, Ba or Sr, the article is removed from the bath in an atmosphere of at least 25% by weight of nitrogen. The remainder of the atmosphere may be an inert gas e.g. argon. The bath may also include calcium nitride. The coated article may be subsequently passivated in a HNO 3 -NA 2 CR 2 O 7 solution and then rubbed with an aqueous slurry of MgO. |
