Spaced rows of containers C on a conveyer 70 are moved transversely into a transfer member 72 while still moving in the direction of conveyance of the conveyer 70, this movement being terminated gently by the containers sliding to a stop. The container row is swept into a pocket 74 of the member 72 by a rotating vane 108. Sliding friction between each container row and the surfaces with which it engages on the vane 108, a transfer platform 104, and the sides 102 of the respective pocket 74, cause the gentle termination. Converging rails 108, 109 bring all of the containers of the row into abutment as the member 72 rotates. A member 113 prevents the containers C from falling out of the pockets 74, and where this terminates, the container row slides out into a pocket of a cooker conveyer 40. The drives of the conveyer 70, the vane 108, and the member 72 are all derived by gearing from the drive of the conveyer (40) (Fig. 1, not shown). |
