1340854 Multi-spindle lathes WICKMAN MACHINE TOOL SALES Ltd 14 Jan 1971 [31 Jan 1970] 4793/70 Heading B3T An automatic multi-spindle lathe comprises an indexable spindle drum 14 in which the spindles are mounted, each spindle being driven from a main shaft 21 by way of gears 22, 23 and each spindle being provided with at least one hydraulically actuated clutch to facilitate selected engagement of the spindles during a machining cycle, the operation of the clutches being effected by valves fixed to the spindle drum which are actuated by plungers 73 engageable by cams 75 as the spindle drum is indexed. In addition a piston and cylinder unit 77, connected to a cam 78 may be actuated to operate the valve plunger 73 which permits change in operation of a particular spindle when the drum is stationary. In the embodiment described in Figs. 1 and 3 each spindle is provided with two clutches constituted by parts 24, 25 and 45, 46 respectively and an hydraulically actuated spindle brake 52-55. The clutches and brakes are hydraulically controlled in relation to the indexing of the spindle drum. |
