A dispensing apparatus comprises a hopper having a valve therein which is shiftable between open and closed positions to permit controlled volummetric dispensing of a flowable material into a container. The volummetric control vlave may be adjusted during operation of the apparatus by external adjustment means. A sensing control mechanism is operable to engage containers, such as unsymmetrical ham cans, conveyed by a conveyor to the dispensing apparatus to operate the valve when the container is in position to receive material from the hopper.
