1461206 Self-steering bogies AUTO STEERING TRAILERS Ltd 11 Feb 1975 [11 Feb 1974] 5672/75 Headings B7H and B7D A self-steering bogie for a semi-trailer comprises a bogie frame 19 on which are mounted a non-steerable rear axle 52 and a front axle 45 having steerable wheels 63 carried on pivoted stub axles 62 which are connected by steering linkage to a torque shaft 18 adapted to be secured at its upper end to the semi-trailer 10. The torque shaft 18 is bolted or welded to a slide 12 adjustably secured to longitudinal angle irons 11 beneath the semi-trailer 10. A bush 20 on the frame 19 rotatably receives the torque shaft 18, and plastics bearing pads 24, 29 are interposed between plates 23, 28 and 24, 29 on the slide 12 and frame 19 respectively. A yoke 32 splined to the lower end of the torque shaft 18 is coupled by drag links 37, 38 to a crank 40 on a relay shaft 41 which is journalled in a sleeve 42 on the front axle 45 and carries an arm 46 connected by track rods 47, 48 to steering arms 65 on the stub axles 62. The length of each drag link 37, 38 and track rod 47, 48 is adjustable and a number of positions are provided for connecting the links to the yoke 32 and crank 40 so that the steering geometry can be varied. A pneumatic cylinder 88 on the bogie can be pressurized when reversing to force a plunger into a pocket 91 on the slide 12 to prevent turning of the bogie. Key-operated mechanism may be provided for locking the bogie in an askew position to prevent unauthorized use of the semi-trailer. Tie rods 59 connect the axles 45, 52 to brackets 60 on the frame 19, and leaf springs 53 clamped to the axle engage outer shoes 54, 57 and pivoted inner shoes 55, 56 connected by equalizing links 58. |
