A roller (e.g. a calender roll for impressing a pattern on cloth) comprises a central section 12 fixed on a shaft 11 of which the length is extensible by pairs of hemi-cylindrical extension pieces 13, 14, anchored to the shaft by clamping between conical faced rings 15, 15A, 15B. The rings 15, 15A, 15B may be fixed to the shaft and on the pieces 13, 14 there may be fixed mating parts 16 and mating parts 17 axially adjustable by screws 18.
