The quantity of regenerating liquid supplied to the packed bed during regeneration stage and the quantity of gas to be treated are controlled solely by control devices for the quantity of regenerating liquid. Specifically, water may be used as regenerating liquid, and while water is flowing downwards through the bed undergoing regeneration, the waste gas valve admitting gas to bed may be left open, since downward flow of water prevents any gas from flowing through bed.
