[Also in Divisions E1-E2, F1 and F2] Apparatus for automatically locking and unlocking the hand brake of a motor vehicle comprises a hand brake actuator 10 movable between brake actuating and brake de-actuating positions upon rotational movement of said actuator 10 through a predetermined angle means 24, 26 for holding the actuator 10 in the brake actuating position, vehicular security lock means 28 for locking the actuator 10 in the actuating position and an electric circuit 52 for operating the security lock means 28, which circuit 52 includes vehicular security lock operating means 48 responsive to the energization of the circuit 52 for operating the security lock means 28 and a hand brake switch 70 adapted to de-energize the circuit 52 upon deactuation of the vehicular hand brake. As shown, the vehicular security lock operating means comprises a solenoid 48 which moves a plunger 40 when circuit 52 is energized. The plunger 40 is pivotally connected to a locking- arm 32 which is spring-biased to its locking position (Fig. 4) and includes a slot-engaging portion 36 and movement of plunger 40 causes movement of portion 36 out of a security slot 30 in a shaft 18 which is part of actuator 10. The shaft 18 is movable in a housing 12 and includes latching slots 24 engageable by a latching pawl 26 to hold the brake in its actuated position and disengageable upon rotation of the shaft 18 the security slot 30 being positioned such that rotation is prevented when the slot engaging portion 36 is in its engaged position. On the shaft 18 is positioned a tab 74 which upon movement of the shaft 18 to the brake de-actuating position opens the switch 70 to thereby de-energize circuit 52 so that plunger 40 is moved back to a position in which the security lock means 28 is repositioned for locking actuator 10 when it is thereafter moved to the brake actuating position. |
