[Also in Division C5] A composition for softening fabrics, particularly during the wash cycle in an automatic washing machine, comprises (1) a mixture of quaternary ammonium compounds of formula: where R 1 and R 2 are independently selected from:- and Radical II: CH 3 (CH 2 ) y -, and mixtures thereof, where m=3-11, n=1-6, m+n= 9-12, y=11-17; R 3 and R 4 are independently selected from methyl, ethyl, propyl and isopropyl; R 5 is methyl or ethyl; and X is selected from chloride, bromide, iodide, methosulphate and ethosulphate; wherein 5-25% of the mixture contains Radical I and, in the remaining 95-75% of the mixture, 40-60% of the content of Radical II consists of carbon chains where y=11-14, with the remainder being carbon chains where y=15-17; and (2) a tertiary amine oxide having the structure where R 6 is a C 16-22 radical or a 2-hydroxy derivative thereof; and R 7 and R 8 are each independently methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl or hydroxyethyl radicals; the weight ratio of quaternary ammonium compounds to tertiary amine oxide being 1:1 to 7:1. The composition is normally used as an aqueous solution or dispersion. It may be prepared in solid form for addition to a detergent solution or for mixing with a detergent in particulate form. In solid form it may contain diluents such as urea, sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, starch, colloidal clay, finely divided silica, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, poly phosphates and sodium tetraborate. In solution it may contain hydrotropes, non-ionic surfactants, viscosity regulators, germicides, optical brighteners, and colourants. |
