In a method of connecting the ends of two plastics-coated metallic strips 3 the ends are placed in overlapping relationship between two electrically heated welding dies 1, 2, an embossing member 5 having a plurality of pointed raised portions being interposed between one of the dies and one of the strips, and the dies 1, 2 are pressed together; the strips are welded together as shown in Fig. 3, a plurality of pointed metal elements of one of the strips being formed which protrude through the bonded plastics layer to bond with the metal of the other strip. The embossing member may consist of a sheet of rough sandpaper and the method is particularly applicable to bonding plastics-coated aluminium strips for use as electric cable sheathing. The metallic strips may be coated on only one side or both sides. In an apparatus for carrying out the invention the movable welding die is attached to a lever the free end of which is operated by an electromagnet controlled by a timing relay. |
