The apparatus, in particular a heat exchanger, has a jacket pipe (1) in which a plurality of packing bodies (2a, 2b, 2c) are arranged one behind the other. The jacket pipe (I) is surrounded by an annular space (5) having a steam feed pipe (4). The liquid (6) to be heated is fed axially into the jacket pipe (I) and brought into contact with the steam (7) which is fed in in the form of jets through openings (3).
<??>As a consequence of the rapid dispersion of the steam, small steam bubbles are produced which condense on contact with the liquid. This achieves a rapid heat transfer and steam/liquid knocking is prevented.
