The invention comprises substituted 1,4,5- triamino-8-hydroxy-anthraquinones of the general formula wherein X is -O-, -S-, -SO- or -SO 2 -; R is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical and R1 is H, halogen, or an -SR11, -SOR11, -SO 2 R11 or -OR11 group wherein R11 is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical. Preferably R and R1 are C 1-16 alkyl, benzyl or naphthyl-methyl radicals. They are prepared by reacting sulphur and oleum, e.g. 5-65% oleum, preferably at 0-150‹ C., with a cyclic sulphamide ester of the general formula or a cyclic sulphimide ester of the general formula in which formulµ X, R and R1 are as defined above. Preferably 1 to 3 moles of sulphur per mole of anthraquinone starting material is used. The cyclic esters may be prepared by (a) reacting a cyclic ester unsubstitutad in the 2 position with an appropriate compound or (b) reacting a 1,4-diamino-5-nitro-anthraquinone suitably substituted in the 2- and 3-positions with oleum and sulphur at 15-25‹ C. and it is also stated that the final dyes may be prepared directly from the 1,4-diamino anthraquinone compounds, the cyclic esters being prepared in situ. Many examples are given and the following compounds are specifically claimed per se: 1,4,5 - triamino - 8 - hydroxy - 2 - phenylsulphonyl anthraquinone; 1,4,5 - triamino - 8- hydroxy - 2 - (41 - chloro-) - phenylsulphonyl anthraquinone; 1,4,5 - triamino - 8 - hydroxy- 2 - methyl (or 2 - ethyl) - sulphonyl anthraquinone and 1,4,5 - triamino - 8 - hydroxy - 2- phenylthio-anthraquinone. The products give red-blue and blue shades on synthetic polyesters and cellulose esters by printing and the Thermosol process.
