Photographic images are made by imagewise exposure of a photographic element which contains (at least during the Ag halide development stage), in the following order, (a) opt. an overcoating layer; (c) a layer contg. a modifyable image substance (I) and (d) a support. The element may also contain intermediate layers. The exposed material is treated in an aq. bath to give a soln. or dispersion of an Ag halide developing and (I)-modifying agent (II) in the Ag halide emulsion layer(s) to develop the latent Ag. image. In the non latent image areas, (II) is allowed to diffuse as a reversed image from the Ag halide emulsion layer(s) into the layer contg. (I), so that (I) is modified by redn. The process is esp. useful in the prodn. of colour photographic materials which do not involve diffusion of dyes within the material and which allow complete recovery of the Ag or which reduce the amt. of Ag used.
|
