The assembly includes a hollow cylindrical shell element (10) of circular or elliptical cross-section, a pair of end plates (11) arranged to be secured one to each end of the element, and sealing means (12) located between each end plate (11) and the element (10). The sealing means is of a flexible material shaped to cooperate with the end plate (11) and the end of the element (10) to provide a first cylindrical portion (14) fitting closely around an end of the element (10) and a second portion (15) integral with the first portion and forming a flange extending towards a longitudinal axis of the shell to an extent at least equal to the thickness of the element (10). <IMAGE>
