1,213,612. Aliphatic and cycloaliphatic alcohols. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 2 Jan., 1969 [2 Jan., 1968], No. 374/69. Heading C2C. Aliphatic and cycloaliphatic alcohols are prepared by treating a solution of the appropriate aliphatic or cycloaliphatic aldehyde in a monohydric C 1-5 alcohol and optionally, an inert organic diluent, with liquid sodium and/or potassium amalgam in a manner such as to reduce the aldehyde to the required alcohol. Examples of suitable aldehydes for use in the preparation are acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, valeraldehyde, oenanthaldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, isovaleraldehyde, 2-ethylhexanal and pivalic aldehyde; and cyclopentane, cyclopentene, cyclohexane and cyclohexene carboxaldehydes, Aldehydes which are substituted by one or more hydroxyl, alkoxy, dialkylamino, carboxyl or nitrile groups may also be used, lactones possibly being formed when an aldehyde carboxylic acid is reduced initially to a hydroxy carboxylic acid, but otherwise the additional substituent group(s) is/are not affected by the reduction. |
