Tetracycline derivs. of formula (I):- (where R is H or Cl and R1 is H or OH,) are produced in practically quantitative yields by electrochemically dehalogenating a compound of formula (II) (where X is halogen) in an electrolytic cell without diaphragm in an acidic or neutral electrolyte contng. a suitable solvent (e.g. MeOH) at a metal or graphite cathode and a Pt or graphite anode at room temp. and a controlled potential of -0.2 to -0.8 V with respect to a satd. calomel electrode or at a constant current density for the theoretically required time and isolating the product by evaporating the organic solvent (opt. after neutralising any excess acid which may be present), evaporating off the organic solvent, cooling, and filtering, or by any other usual method (e.g. precipitation in the form of a poorly soluble salt or complex).
|
