PLASMA DISPLAY DEVICE AND DRIVING METHOD THEREOF

A plasma display device and a diving method thereof are provided to display the optimum image by controlling the brightness of an image signal selectively according to the intensity of the external light. A table mapping a power save mode and a bright mode set for corresponding to the intensity of the external light is stored(S10). The intensity of the external light in the outside with the display device is sensed(S20). The power save mode and the bright mode are set according to the sensed intensity of the light respectively(S30). The average brightness level of the presently inputted frame is detected(S40). The sustain number according to the detected average brightness level is set up based on the sustain number according to the power save mode and the bright mode and the maximum sustain number(S50). A driving signal for displaying the image signal in response to the sustain number is generated and the corresponding image signal is displayed(S60).
