The invention comprises compounds of formulae wherein R 2 is H or alkyl, Rα is H or alkyl, R 5 is X, alkoxy, alkenoxy, NO 2 , NH 2 , NH alkyl, N(alkyl) 2 or OH, and X‹ is X, SH, alkyl S, alkyl SO, alkyl SO 2 , CX 3 , X 3 CS, X 3 CO, NO 2 or N(alkyl) 2 (X = halogen), provided that when R 5 is alkoxy and Rα is H, X‹ is not p-X. The 1 - unsubstituted 3 - cyanoalkylindenes (I) are prepared by reacting the corresponding 3- indanone with RαCHCNCO 2 H, followed by decarboxylation of intermediate so formed. The 1 - benzylidene - 3 - cyanoalkyl - indenes are prepared by (a) reacting I with the corresponding benzaldehyde, or (b) dehydrating the appropriate 1 - benzylidene - 3 - carbamylalkylindene. |
