A continuously variable transmission (24) has a driving pulley (12) and a driven pulley (14) each of which has a V-shaped groove (24, 26) in which sits the belt (28). The belt (28) comprises a base portion (84) of a rubber-like compound in which are imbedded a plurality of transverse metal pins (30) each of which has exposed bent end portions (32) whose tips (88) are tapered to conform to the taper of the grooves (24, 26) and a plurality of cables (90) imbedded in the base (84) and extending longitudinally around the belt (28) for stabilizing the length of the belt (28). The pulley walls (12A, 12B, 14A, 14B) are coupled to their corresponding shaft (18, 20) by a resilient coupling (68) which helps provide a desired clamping force on the belt (28) and which includes a series of serrated members (66A, 68B, 76A) designed to exhibit a wedging action which provides the desired clamping force. |
