PURPOSE: To support a rearview mirror or the like without requiring complexity and storage costs and to provide multiple release and separation modes by providing holding means for resiliently holding a base and a coupler in installed positions and for releasing the coupler from the base when a predetermined force is imposed on the coupler. CONSTITUTION: A breakaway mounting assembly 10 includes a base 20 adapted for adhesive attachment to the inner surface 12 of a windshield W, a coupler 70 adapted for slidable and rotatable mounting on the base 20 and for engagement with a support arm 16 for a rearview mirror assembly 14 or another accessory support, and a resilient, biasing retainer or spring member which normally retains the coupler 70 on the base 20, while allowing release of the coupler 70 in various separation modes when impact is imposed from any of several directions. The base 20 of the mounting assembly 10 is secured to the inner surface of the windshield W with an adhesive.
