Disazo dyes of the general formula <FORM:1117698/C4-C5/1> wherein a, b and c are H or CH3; SO3M is ortho, meta or, when c is not present, para to the azo group; M is H, alkali metal or an ammonium group; a1 and b1 are H1CH3 or a C1- 2 alkoxy radical; a11 is H1Cl or a C1- 4 alkyl radical and b11 is H or CH3 are prepared by conventional diazotization and coupling methods. The intermediate monoazo dyes may contain an aminomethane sulphonic acid group which may be hydrolysed to an amino group using NaOH and in the absence of a sulphonic acid group in the prepared intermediate, the intermediate mono-azo dye may be sulphonated. Alternatively the corresponding disazo dye may be sulphonated to give the SO3H group. The dyes give yellow-orange shades on wool, silk and especially nylon carpets at pH values above 6. |
