[Also in Division B3] Coil tightening apparatus having coil support means for supporting a coil of sheet material in a generally upright position with its axis substantially vertical, pressure applying means for applying radially inward pressure on the outer surface of a coil of sheet material during relative rotation of the coil and the pressure applying means and drive means for effecting such relative rotation. The apparatus comprises a frame of four upright posts straddling a conveyer, Fig. 1 (not shown), on which the coil (12) rests and by which it is brought to a position under a platform from which is suspended a vertically movable strapping unit (22), which is fully described in U.S.A. Specification 3,216,346. The coil-tightening unit 40 comprises a base ring 42, connected by four posts 44 to the frame 32 of the strapping unit. The outer race ring 46 of a ball bearing unit is attached to the underside of the base ring and supports an inner ring 52 which is of L-shaped cross-section and has inwardly pointing teeth 60 which mesh with a drive gear 62. A motor 64 drives the gear 62 through a speed reducer 66 and a clutch and brake mechanism 70. Pivoted to the ring 52 is an arm 72 which carries a roller 78 at its free end and which is rotated about its pivot 74 by a double-acting fluid cylinder 80, fed from an hydraulic accumulator 94. The ring rotates at about 14 r.p.m. and the roller exerts a radial pressure of 1200-1500 p.s.i. on the coil. One revolution of the ring is found to tighten one loose turn of the coil, so that the ring must rotate as many times as there are loose turns on the coil. Limit switches stop the ring in a predetermined position so that a fluid source can recharge the accumulator through a quickly releasable valve 92.
