1293280 Jointing CEBAL GP 19 April 1971 [6 Feb 1970] 21225/71 Heading B3V [Also in Division B8] An apparatus for hermetically fixing a twopart plastics member 11 111 into an opening 5 in a metallic lid 4 (e.g. of a preserves can) consists of a screw driving device 11 and an ultrasonic generator 13. The end members 10 and 12 are of polygonal shape and engage with openings 8 and 9. The member 12 holds the member 11 rotationally still while the member 11 screws the members 11 and 111 together, until they are in a position as in Fig. 2 (not shown). The members 11 and 111 in this position are so tightly screwed as to cause a slight deformation of the plastics member in the region of the flange 6. The ultrasonic generator 13 is then activated, giving rise to localized fusion of the plastics material in the region of the flange which, under the action of the internal stress caused by the aforementioned deformation, causes the welding of the upper member 11 on to the flange 6. The drive member 11 is then used to further screw the members 11, 111 together while the plastics material is still fixed. In a different embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the two-part plastics member is used to rivet together two metal sheets (200, 2001).
