A plate (30) secured within the housing (10) of the commutator motor (13) carries the brush holders and also an assembly (47) of two Hall effect transducers co-operating with an axially magnetised ring (46) on the rotor shaft (21). The speed and direction of rotation are monitored by an electronic processor (43) on the protruding portion of the plate which is covered by a plastic hood (32). The plate is radially movable into its final position with a substantial part protruding from an opening (31). ADVANTAGE - The detector of rotational speed and direction together with the measurement convertor and processing electronics can be mounted with the commutator brushes on the same plate fitted on completion of the assembly.
