A self - propelled armourpiercing shell comprises an armour-piercing core 1 carried by a base 2 whose external diameter corresponds to the calibre of the shell. The core 1 extends forwardly and is surrounded by a cover 4 forming the ogive and fixed to the base. A propelling charge 5 is housed in the elongated annular space between the core and cover communicating with a nozzle 6 at the rear. The nozzle and passages 7 are packed with an initiator charge 8 ignited by the gases in the gun barrel. A front piece 9 with wings 10 centres the core. In another form, Fig. 5 (not (shown), several nozzles 6a open just above the band 3, whereby the charge 5 is protected. In this case, or alternatively to the igniter charge 8, the charge 5 may be ignited by means located at the front of the shell. In one modification, the heat from air friction goes through a high-conductivity element 8a to the igniter charge 8b. The charge 5 has ignition transmitting conduits 8d. The element 8a may be replaced by a resonance tube 8e which collects the shock wave at the nose and is heated thereby. |
