1,170,476. Air cushion vehicles. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. 12 Sept., 1967 [12 Sept., 1966], No. 41543/67. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle 1 normally supported by cushions formed within plenum chambers 2 by air delivered through duct 3 by a fan 4 is provided with rocket engines 7, preferably at each corner, arranged vertically within Venturi ducts 8 whereby air is entrained to increase the mass flow to provide jet lift to the vehicle to enable it to surmount obstacles. The rockets are preferably supplied with the same fuel as the fan-driving engine 5 and an oxidizer from a pressurized tank 9. Each plenum chamber 2 has a valve 11 and the duct 3 a valve 12 so that during the jet-lift phase of operation the air supply to the plenum chambers may be cut off and delivered to one or more orientable nozzles 13 to control the vehicle, the valve-operating mechanism being actuated by a common lever 14. A forward propulsion propeller unit 6 is provided. |
