Neutral to basic Zn di-3-18 C-alkyldithiophosphates contg. higher mol. wt Zn 3-18 C-alkylthiophosphates are useful as additives to mineral oil or synthetic lubricants, and have high seat-stability and do not decompose to corrosive products. They are prepd. by reacting a dialkyldithiophosphoric acid RO(R1O)PSSH (I) (where R and R1 are 3-18 C alkyl) in an at least weakly polar solvent with an excess of ZnO or Zn(OH)2 first at 20-30 degrees C and then at 60-80 degrees C, pref. 65-70 degrees C; removing from reaction mixture, in desired sequence, the water of neutralisation formed, the polar solvent and the undissolved constituents, and opt. adjusting the desired alkalinity by further addition of
