The system protects potentially hazardous appliances, such as cookers, from danger by means of sensors detecting smoke, electrical current and the presence of personnel, and with a computer interrupting the supply. An electric domestic cooker (1) has, in the vicinity, a smoke detector (2), a detector (3) to sense the proximity of a person and a current sensor (4) connected to a microcomputer (5) which disconnects the supply (9) in the event of smoke emission, the absence of an attendant for a pre-selected period or the supply being maintained beyond a pre-selected time. Indicator units (6,7) permit the selection of times depending on the cooking process and indicate the status of the supply.
