1,195,660. Crystalline polyolefins. UBE INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Dec., 1968, No. 59020/68. Heading C3P. Crystalline polyolefins are prepared by polymerizing C 3-6 olefins in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (a) a titanium trihalide, (b) an organoaluminium compound such as triethylaluminium or diethyl aluminium halide and (c) a triphosphite of formula (R<SP>1</SP>3) 3 P wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrocarbon group of 1-20 carbon atoms, or a trithiophosphate of formula (R<SP>13</SP>) 3 PO. The mole ratio of (a) to (b) is from 1: 0À1 to 1: 10 and the mole ratio of (b) to (c) is from 1: 0À005 to 1: 5. In the examples, propylene or butene are polymerized either continuously in an organic solvent or in bulk using a catalyst consisting of (a) 3TiCl 3 .AlCl 3 , (b) Et 2 AlCl or Et 3 Al and (c) trilauryltrithiophosphite or phosphate, triethyltrithiophosphite or phosphate, triphenyltrithiophosphite or phosphate, tributyltrithiophosphite or tribenzyltrithiophosphite or phosphate. The catalyst is decomposed with methanol/hydrochloric acid, and the polymer washed and dried. The polymer is insoluble in boiling heptane. |
