Compounds of the formula I <IMAGE> in which X represents oxygen or sulphur or a group of the formula =N-alkyl, R represents, for example, halogen, n represents, for example, O or 1 and R<1> represents, for example, alkyl, are prepared for example by reacting a compound of the formula IV <IMAGE> in which Z represents halogen with hydroquinone in the presence of a base and then reacting the product without isolation with a 2-chloropropionic ester in the presence of catalytic amounts of metal iodide and/or 2-iodopropionic ester.
