The cleaning head has a housing (1) which has a plate (6) across the open bottom incorporating suction channels. A brush (9) is contained within the housing (1) above the plate (6) which can be lowered into a working position, in which it projects beyond the plate (6), by manually releasing a catch which normally holds the brush (9) in the retracted position. PRef. the locking catch for the brush (9) comprises a pivoted lever arm (31) fitting through a slot (29) in the housing (1) with a locking nose (30) at one end and a pedal (32) attached to the opposite end. A bias spring (51) acts on the lever pivot axis to bias it into engagement with a wedge element (20) cooperating with the brush holder (8). The cleaning head is designed for use on carpeted or solid floors in dependance on the brush position.
