In a grab for nuclear fuel elements, jaws 7, 8, Fig. 1, are pivoted about pins 9, 10 in a body 1 by a cam 12 on an operating rod 11 which is attached by a ball joint 13, 14 to a lever 15 and guided by three fingers 19 and a collar 22. In operation an inner sleeve 18 is lowered until its bottom end abuts the tops of fuel elements adjacent the one to be lifted. Lowering of the rod 11 by the lever 15 moves the body 1 into the top of the fuel element and subsequently cams the jaws 7, 8 outwards to engage the element, Fig. 2 (not shown). The element is now withdrawn by upward movement of the sleeve 18. Fig. 4 shows how the ball joint 13, 14 and a groove 4, Fig. 1, and ledge 27 in the sleeve 18 enable the grab to be self-centring with respect to a misaligned element. |
