The plasma display unit has a number of surface discharge electrodes (102), sweep electrodes (103) and lower electrodes (104) parallel to each other in lines and a set of electrodes (105) parallel in columns. Digital pulses are applied to the column electrodes providing wall charges and positive and negative polarity sweep charges are also applied to the second unit. Luminous elements (119) are lit up in a discharge space (106) emitting luminous light. Sweep pulses can be applied to both assembly units at the same time.
