In an apparatus of the type in which cigarettes are tested during transport for air leaks in their wrappers whilst being held on the surface of a rotating drum 11, the cigarettes pass through a suction chamber 28 at which point any air flow through the wrapper is sensed. The cigarettes are transferred in known manner from a suction feed drum (6) to cradles 12 on the drum 11 having semi-circular formers 15, 16 on which they are held by guides (32) formed as extensions of the chamber 28. Followers 24, actuated by a stationary cam 27, then close end caps 19 with semi-circular formers 20, 21 about the ends of the cigarettes to hold the cigarettes to the drum 11 and seal off the ends thereof. The cigarettes then pass through the chamber 28, which chamber is connected to a suction source, and any flow of air through the wrappers of the cigarettes is detected in turn by a suction transducer 37 fed via a pipe 36 and, associated with each cigarette position, a hole 34 and a groove 33 leading to a bleed hole 33A in the top left hand (as shown) end cap 19. When testing filter cigarettes, the filter end only of the cigarette may be capped the other end being sealed by a resilient stop. Pressure may be sensed at both ends of a cigarette by the provision of a second transducer (37A) connected to the other end of the cigarette, or both ends may be connected simultaneously to the pipe 36 feeding the transducer 37. Signals from the transducer 37, corresponding to faulty cigarettes, are transferred to a magnetic memory disc and subsequently used to actuate a rejector mechanism (Figs. 1, 4, not shown) which comprises a rotating fluted drum (43) the flutes (44) of which register with the flutes (39) of an adjacent rotating suction drum (38) over their restricted adjacent portions, and, situated behind the position where the flutes (39, 44) are in register, a hole (46) through which an air jet is directed in response to the aforesaid signals. An electromagnetically actuated butterfly valve may be provided to rapidly cut off the supply of suction to the chamber 28 should the apparatus stop for any cause. Accommodation of slight variations in cigarette diameter is provided by the formers 15, 16, 20, 21 being not quite a complete semicircle in shape and being of a slightly larger radius than that of the cigarette. |
