PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly recover the appropriate chain tensile force for smooth traveling by making the oil inside of a high-pressure oil chamber flow in a tensioner for absorption without discharging the oil outside the tensioner when excessively high pressure is generated inside the high-pressure oil chamber by the excessive tensile force of a timing chain, an excessive supply of the oil from an oil pressure generating source such as an oil pump and a resonance phenomenon over the whole of the device. SOLUTION: A bypass oil passage 12d formed in a tensioner main body 12 of a hydraulic tensioner with a relief valve provided opposite to the traveling timing chain to make the oil flow between an oil supply port 12b and the high- pressure oil chamber 12c, bypassing a check valve mechanism 13, is provided with a relief valve 15 to be opened and closed in response to the oil pressure of the oil forcedly fed from the oil pressure generating source such as an oil pump through the oil supply port 12b.
